Mighty Thundercloud Edible Forest > About

We are a 7.5 acre Farm

Mighty Thundercloud Edible Forest is managed as a sustainable ecosystem that builds life into our soil.

Our management practices build soil fertility and enhance biodiversity, while aiming to reduce our environmental footprint.

Our strategy is to avoid the use of toxic chemicals (i.e. - synthetic fertilizers and pesticides) and replace them with internal ecological controls and organic practices.

The outcome is high yields of healthy and tasty food that help strengthen our community and enhance household-level nutrition.

Our Dream Team

Thelonius is focused on a key challenge facing our global community. With a world population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050: How do we meet the food and nutrition needs of a growing population, without compromising human health or sacrificing the environmental integrity of local landscapes and the global environment?

The Openfield Timeline

2015

First Season of Production

This year we began cover cropping and adding biodiversity to revive the soil after many years of being mono-cropped by the previous tenders.

2016

Built our First Hightunnel

We began hightunnel production to grow niche crops like ginger and turmeric and extend the season for high-value crops like tomatoes, peppers, greens and hemp. We also entered into the NRCS Eqip program to acquire assistance incorporating conservation practices.

2017

Deep Well Drilled

After the well was installed, we were able to implement a drip irrigation system. We also made a Coolbot mobile walk-in refrigerator out of a enclosed trailer to store harvested produce.

2018

First Year of Ginger Production

We planted ginger seed brought from Tanzania and have planting and propagating it ever since. We also added a second hightunnel to improve our crop rotation practices.

2019

First Year of Hemp Production

We officially became licensed to grow industrial hemp at the end of 2018 and planted our first crop the summer of 2019.
